During his 40 years as an attorney, Steven Brizek has experienced the practice of law from many different perspectives and contexts, in the course of which he has had the opportunity and privilege to successfully be of service to many, both in the public and private sectors.
Mr. Brizek’s legal career began with active duty service as an attorney in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the Navy, in which he served on Guam as the Naval Station Legal Officer and in Washington, D. C. as the Commissioner of the Navy Court of Military Review.
Following the completion of his military service as a Navy lawyer, during which he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, Mr. Brizek has expanded his legal experience during the periods in which he has been engaged in private practice and during the 27 years that he served as an assistant prosecutor with the Passaic County, New Jersey Prosecutor’s Office, where he achieved a noted reputation as one of its premiere criminal trial attorneys.
Mr. Brizek’s expertise as a criminal trial attorney is in part the result of his having tried over 350 criminal cases to a jury, disposed of thousands of cases by way of negotiation and plea bargaining, presented hundreds of matters to the Grand Jury, represented the Prosecutor’s Office in hundreds of matters in Municipal Courts throughout Passaic County, supervised the investigation and Grand Jury presentation of scores of homicides and worked on appeals to the New Jersey Supreme Court and to the Appellate Division. Mr. Brizek successfully prosecuted the first “Three Strikes” case tried in New Jersey, as well as a number of other prominent cases. One of those cases, among the many other major cases handled by Mr. Brizek that received extensive media attention during his prosecutorial career, involved a murder investigation and trial that became the subject of a book entitled Buried Mistakes, published in 1992.
Mr. Brizek is a member of the Bars of the States of New Jersey and New York and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey and the U.S. Court of Military Review.
